Why Is There Still a Stigma Around Therapy?

The answer might surprise you.

For decades, therapy has been weighed down by stereotypes—portrayed as something only for people in crisis, or reserved for specific kinds of people: wealthy or fragile. These ideas, like most stigmas, are built on outdated assumptions rather than truth.

The reality is: there is no one way therapy should look. It doesn’t have to be cold, clinical, or confined to a couch. It’s not just for emergencies or the elite. Therapy is as diverse and personal as the people who seek it.

And in many ways, therapy extends beyond the session itself. It lives in the small, intentional choices we make to care for ourselves—whether it’s giving yourself five more minutes of rest in the morning, stepping outside for air, or arriving to work early just to ease your stress. These are therapeutic acts. These are reflections of self-awareness.

The more we talk about therapy as a tool for everyday people managing everyday emotions, the closer we get to dissolving the stigma. Because the truth is, therapy isn’t a last resort—it’s a form of care. And everyone deserves that.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

Take a moment today to check in with yourself. What’s one way you’ve cared for your mental health this week? Share it with a friend—or share it with us. Because when we talk about healing openly, we make space for others to do the same.

And if you're curious about starting therapy or rethinking what it can look like for you, our team is here when you're ready.

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to do it all alone.
